We get tempted by the magazine ads and TV commercials to purchase the latest products. Read carefully, they promise to reduce the appearance of wrinkles they do not take the wrinkles away permanently. Some products are mainly whipped up mineral oil, lanolin, petrolatum and beeswax. This is great for dry skin and brittle nails and for those who wash their hands frequently. It will not prevent wrinkles, but will plump your face and you will look better. For best results you need to read the ingredient of the product.
As for “quick fixes” and better long term appearance:
- Look for products that have an ingredient listed as: hyaluronic acid, retin-A, Niacin, DMAE and hydroquinone (for brown spots) which seem to show “real” results as of this writing. These ingredients have properties that do work. WHY? Hyaluronic Acid is the moisture fluid substance produced naturally in our bodies. When we sweat, we can feel this moisture ooze from our bodies. Replacing this into our facial skin and neck area returns this moisture back into the skin layers. IF you do this daily with a hyaluronic acid product you will see results…but there is a trick…the hyaluronic acid molecules must be very light, otherwise they remain on top of the skin and do not get absorbed into the deeper layers. Most beauty products that have this ingredient are not small enough (as this is an expensive process) to penetrate deeply.
- The one product that does what it says it will do as the molecular weight of the hyaluronic acid is very light is FILLERINA and FILLERINA PLUS a Swiss company, LABO, that is more pharmaceutical than cosmetic. (More info see blog post: MUST HAVES/What Nola Can’t Live Without and the blog post: HELLO GORGEOUS/Gorgeous Wrinkle-Free Skin.)
- FILLERINA directions tell you to leave the Replenishing Gel on the face for ten minutes before applying the Nourishing Cream. When you do this you will be amazed as you can see and feel it disappearing into the skin. This is not only a quick fix, but it builds up over time.
- There are creams and serums that fill in wrinkles and products that have microscopic 3-dimensional nanoprisms that reflect light giving the illusion of wrinkle free skin. (I think this is a brilliant idea! BUT it is not magic!)
All do a good job for the “appearance” of looking wrinkle free. The truth is sadly, our skin ages and the only thing that we know works is staying out of the sun and using a quality sun block. AND to not smoke!
Over the counter beauty products that have one of the above listed ingredient can not stop the aging, but can slow it down by encouraging our bodies to produce more elastin and collagen the key to preventing wrinkles and sagging skin. Due to FDA rules cosmetics are limited as to the strength of the products they can put into their formulas. It is for the consumer’s protection, as some products can cause serious chemical burns or allergic reactions.
Laser and radio frequency treatments go deeper and work in a different way. They work under the skin inside the dermis, simply by letting the heat generated to damage the tissue several layers beneath the skin. These treatments are painful and can take us out of the limelight for up to two weeks. Our bodies naturally jump to repair the damage and in the process generate new collagen and elastin. Usually within three to six ‘months’ you see results. But, you need to repeat this aggressive treatment after several months or a year, because no matter what we do, depending on genetics and skin type, our skin still ages. Again these treatments under the care of a trained medical professional show results and of course the results depend on how much sagging or how deep the wrinkles. Ask your dermatologist for the specifics particular for your skin type.
